Not much longer
after you bring your new puppy home you will want to start training them. You
will see the reason behind this when they go to the bathroom on the floor and
chew your new shoes up. Behavior training is basically just modifying a puppy’s
natural behavior to fit in better with ours. This type of training is important
to help keep our puppies safe.
How
to train a puppy not to bite is definitely the most important of
them all. If you pretend it’s not a problem, your puppy could end up biting all
through adulthood. Depending on how people react, innocent puppy biting could
turn into aggressive biting. This is because many people choose to react with
aggressive behavior as well. Numerous people are sent to the hospital every
year from dog bite related injuries.
To get your puppy
to not bite, make a high pitched yelp noise right as your puppy bites you. The
other choice you have is to use a Bite Breaker, which is used by people who are
unable to make the correct sound. Your puppy will remember this noise from
their litter and their instincts. During playtime, puppies will make a yelp
when they are bitten by another puppy too roughly.
After the noise, pull
your hand away and stand up. Quickly storm off into another room and close the
door behind you if they don’t seem to be taking the hint. After a minute or so,
you can open the door and resume playing with your puppy. If you hear whining from
your pet you should not open the door until they give up. If you open the door
while they are whining they believe that their whining is the reason you came
out. These actions put you in control of playtime and your puppy will realize they
must respect your rules.
Consistency is another
important factor with this training. Everyone that comes into contact with your
puppy must know how to train your puppy not to bite. Adults may have to help
children conduct this training because it is especially important puppies know
to not bite them. By a couple of weeks you will notice the degree of bite
decreasing and eventually slow to a complete stop.
